Pension & NPS news — what actually changes for you
The three pension systems in one place
Central Government pension news usually turns on which system you are in. OPS (Old Pension Scheme) — a defined benefit of 50% of last pay — applies to those who joined before 1 January 2004. NPS (National Pension System) is a contributory, market-linked corpus for post-2004 recruits: you put in 10% of Basic + DA and the government adds 14%. The newer UPS (Unified Pension Scheme) offers an assured payout of 50% of the average of the last 12 months' basic for 25 years of qualifying service, blending features of both. Dearness Relief and the pension figure
Every pension revision travels with Dearness Relief (DR) — the pensioner's version of DA, at the same percentage and on the same dates. So a DA hike is automatically a pension increase. DR is calculated on the un-commuted basic pension, which is why the commuted pension calculator matters when you plan a lump sum at retirement.
Family pension, gratuity and the minimum floor
Family pension (usually 30% of last pay, enhanced for the first period) and retirement gratuity are the other recurring news items. The 7th CPC set a minimum pension of ₹9,000 and a gratuity ceiling of ₹20 lakh. When the 8th CPC lands, both are expected to be revised through the fitment factor — the same logic as serving pay.
